lectrix_lecti: (Freedom of expression go to hell!)
Since Livejournal/Six Apart have made an abominable mess after deeming it perfectly all right to let rabid homophobic nutcases decide which interests LJ users may list, I've added "rape" to my interest list.

It will stay on the list until Livejournal/Six Apart state clearly that rabid homophobic nutcases shall not dictate a diverse and complex online community such as Livejournal, that writers of fiction are exactly that and usually don't in any way condone rape, paedophilia, incest and other various unsavoury practices in real life, that rape and incest victims shall be able to list what they've dealt with on their profile pages and to write about it in their entries and that Livejournal/6 Apart's first duty in suspension cases is to inform and communicate with Livejournal users, not with the media.

If your profile were to express interest in pedophilia with no other content that describes this interest as in helping survivors or protecting children from it we must read the profile as “I like or I support or I’m in favor of it.”

 - Barak Berkowitz, Chairman and CEO Six Apart

Oh wow, that makes a whole lot of sense. Not.

I have a band called 120 Days on my interest list. The educated passer-by may catch that it's a reference to a pornographic novel, The 120 Days of Sodom by Marquis de Sade. Now, this educated passer-by may be loony enough to report me to Livejournal for having a pornographic reference in my interest list, Livejournal may be loony enough to take said passer-by seriously and actually suspend me for condoning practices such as incest and paedophilia, which occur in the novel - among many, many seriously unappetising sexual acts.

They may all miss that I'm actually interested in a band, and that the reference is not even mine. The band makes it. I could in fact be unaware of the reference altogether.

It's a worst case scenario, but it's not altogether unlikely, considering the mass suspension of fiction and survivor journals and communities.

So, "rape" stays on my interest list until Barak Berkowitz makes a statement in [site community profile] dw_news that satisfies me.

He could damn well learn to write properly, too. Those two entries are painful to read.

I'm wondering if, US-centric as both the rabid homophobic nutcases and the Livejournal/Six Apart management are, I could get away with listing paedophilia - as long as it isn't spelled pedophilia.

I probably could.
