I've asked about what kind of grades it takes to get admitted to the master programme in general literature, and was told that sure, my grades will do nicely.

I just might start. A course or two a term, and a term's leave to finish the dissertation. Hmmm.

Of course, I regret that I didn't go for linguistics instead of literature. I did a few terms' worth of linguistics and philosophy of language, but I spectacularly failed my master level semantics exam... I also regret that I didn't just go for Japanese or Portoguese or some other pretty pretty language.

Since I can't get the master studies started until autumn at the earliest, maybe I should find a nice evening class in some language or other. Maybe German-for-people-who-really-know-the-language-but-have-gotten-rusty. Or French in the same vein.

Certainly. It's not like I have to do a shitload of planning for our sneaky little embassy wedding.

Excellent - go for it then
I think I'd be swayed by picking something up that I kinda knew - i.e. the german or french in your case

Japanese looks pretty but doesn't sound it
Do you know Afrikaans ?

I like the clear harshness of Japanese. That could possibly stem from speaking a very melodic language myself - Asians tend to think Norwegians sound like we're singing.

I only know a few words of Afrikaans, picked up mainly because it's still very close to Dutch, which in its turn is fairly close to Norwegian. I don't think I recall you mentioning that you already know it, so are you thinking of learning it?

Maybe I should try to find a Dutch class.

I don't know it - our department secretary is from South Africa - every now and again she slips into it
so you know me, I've been on translation sites to find out what's going on !!

If you go for Dutch, you'll at least have one person to practise on.. :)

That would also entail getting Skype to practise speaking, eh?

Dutch is fascinating. Plus, it's easy to learn for Norwegians. Hmmm.

I am thinking of Japanese too, but am a bit intimidated by the thought of learning 1000+ different kanji.

A few at a time, though. Nice and slow.

Men trinn 1 har påmeldingsfrist i dag, for pokker.

Oh phooey.

Wonder if I can just get the books and do some self-study?

The football is wildly off-putting, but I'll have a look - thanks, oh master of the more or less obscure language sites.
